Kungfu brother Jarrad & I almost met our makers yesterday. Scary shit along the AT. It was his turn to find a trail for our typical Sunday run and he found some whacked-out place at the end of “The Dragon” just past the NC/TN line, near the Fontana Dam.

The planned run was basically a couple offshoots of a section of the AT that looked promising. The drive took us forever, but about 1:30 we finally pulled up to the trailhead and set out for a 12 miler!

He’d broken the run plan into 3 legs: a 5.8 beginning, then a 2.7 mile sprint, and ending with a 3.7 stretch. We didn’t know what was uphill or downhill, just the connectors and how they eventually formed a big loop back to our starting point.

Halfway through the first leg, Jarrad and his surgically repaired ACL slipped on a wet rock and took an ugly spill into one of the 5 big streams we had to figure our way across. The sky had been spitting little flurries all day, but around the time of his slip, the weather opened up a bit and it really started snowing, billowing a flurry of fat snowflakes down that continued throughout the entire 2nd half of the trailrun. The harsher weather rolled in and began covering any sign of trail we had to go on. For me, that’s when the first real pangs of panic started to creep in. We couldn’t turn back because that would mean trying to cross the wide streams again and, on paper, it would be a slightly shorter trip back to the car if we pushed onward.

So we just kept on moving upward, our legs pumping, arms working like pistons and not looking back. I tried to push the thought of how cold and uncomfortable Jarrad must have been out of my mind. Along with soaking about 75% of his body from his river slip, he’d also slammed into a rock and bruised his right hip pretty bad. He was a true warrior, never stopping, grinding it out up into the mountain unknown.

More snow. Shadow games. We saw a black bear in a tree, and a pack of wild boars running for cover. Daylight slowly faded.

The second 2.7 part was insanely uphill and took forever and by then it was starting to get late –and dark! More snow continued to fall. It was a nightmare of constant self-doubt, wondering if we were on the right trail or were just wandering deeper into the Smokeys. At times Jarrad seemed to lag behind further and further, and then at other stretches he’d be right behind or beside me. I tried to stay ahead of him so at least it wouldn’t give him the idea of giving up and falling asleep -or maybe because I didn’t trust myself being the 2nd runner. We were together, but totally separate and alone. The most important thing was to keep moving.

The uphill and snow made it so we had to snowshoe it up, with our feet pitched at crazy obtuse angles.

I realized that we were already far past a reasonable time of getting home and I tried to push the images of a freaking out Alayne and a crying, fatherless Holland out of my head. I wondered if Alayne was paying attention when I’d told where we were heading, and if that information was enough to do any good if something (like this) happened. I thought about my life insurance policy and found some relief knowing my family’d be taken care of financially –but then I thought that maybe there was a clause that forfeited the payout if I died doing something so stupid and careless.

The snow kept coming and the uphill climb was ever-steepening and seemingly never-ending… Jarrad was a gray blur slowly trudging along down below. We would call out to each other and make sure we were in audible distance. Darker still.

We eventually reached the top of the mind & body crushing 2.7 and saw the trail to next (and final) leg. It was a HUGE relief, but then at one point somewhere around the beginning of the final 3.7 leg, the trail split, going both left and right. There were no markers and dim tracks headed in both directions. This wasn’t part of the plan. Darker still… more snow. Left or right? Left or right? He had to make a decision quick. We choose right, probably because it was looked more downhill and the uphill in the snow was becoming impossible for both of us. So, for the remainder we ran/walked in constant doubt. This was the final challenge that would have ended us. Hypothermia was close and we ran with our near-frostbitten hands inside our shirts against our warm bodies, but tripping on the snow-covered rocks and roots was a constant hindrance. A couple times we saw the lights of what we hoped was the dam far below, but then the trail would turn away from them and more doubt would take over.

near the end, mind & body near breakdown

Jarrad still managed to take pictures throughout the death run and got a shot of me hanging onto a trail sign at the top of the summit 2.5 miler and I all I was thinking was HOLY SHIT, I HAVE TO RUN ANOTHER 5K (.6 more than actually!) –It was so dark and the snow was blustering at that high point.

We started to freeze. Our bodies had stopped pumping enough adrenalin through our bodies to keep us warm. Snow blindness had started to set in and we were both starting to see things that didn’t exist. Lesser men would have stopped long ago, but our kungfu training and strong desire to succeed kept us moving.

When we popped out of the black woods and saw my car sitting there we were beyond ecstatic. We hugged each other for a long time before finding my hidden keys and getting inside. Saying the experience was crazy is a ridiculous understatement. We had been gone for over 7 hours and needless to say, Alayne had already called 911 and Swainee County had started to put together a search & rescue team. But with so many different trails to run on and link onto in and around that area, I don’t think we would’ve been found in time. Death was certainly hiding in the trees, around our feet, and was a constant within the dark corners our minds.

Die Antwoord, The Cannery, Nashville

November 3, 2010

Mysterious South African Interweb phenom Die Antwoord descended upon Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom late this past Wednesday evening like the funky space hip-hop rave-rapper aliens that they are –a whacked-out talented trio overly comfortable and sickly confident in their lyrical spit and fucked-up raw, hard-edged Zef image. They brought with them to the Music City a biting wet drizzle and flashpoint coldness that set the weird mood perfectly. I waited impatiently in the red-brick corner darkness of the downtown industrial venue sipping red bull and slowly grinding my teeth.

Referring to themselves as “a mysterious force from the dark, dangerous depths of Africa,” their unique sound is difficult for the musical layman to accurately describe. It’s been portrayed as a sort of hyper-charged street vulgar fused with English, Afrikaans, and other regionally inflicted tribal languages. An artistic rap gang composed of lead man Ninja, co-conspirator Yo-landi Phi$$er, and the muted DJ Hi-Tek, they employ a kind of music they refer to as an “indigenous Cape Town beat” that seems to somehow successfully fuse early Nineties coke-addled club energy, current dark-rolling rave and house beats with a hardcore white-trash ghetto-rap attitude.

For internet, Facebook and Twitter-driven 20-something year old hipsters, Die Antwoord blew up early last winter. The mysterious controllers behind the group decided to utilize cyberspace’s numerous wide-reaching free social media outlets and edgy, explicit digital marketing as their initial springboard into the collective Ipod of the American & Euro masses. As part of their planned cyber-born launch, their debut album $O$ was made available as a free download on their official website last February. As a testament to how quickly the Die Antwoord movement caught on, one of their videos alone on Youtube (Zef Side) received nearly ten million views just within the first couple of months from its initial viral upload.

Not within the observed demographic, I caught the fever about a month ago (in print of all places) and for the past few weeks, like millions of others have done, are doing right now, and will be doing in the very near future, I fanatically researched everything I could about the group online. Youtubed & Wikipedia’d, only more questions arose. Who are these talented cretins?! I Google’d and searched further. Why can’t I stop watching their videos? I burned their CD and became a fan on Facebook. Is Ninja for real and why am I so attracted to Yolandi!? I started learning curse words in Africaans. Who is the real DJ Hi-Tek? I dug deeper, critically examining their past music and art projects and various other media launches. Is any of this real? I came to the November 3rd show seeking The Answer –which, ironically (or perhaps not), is Die Antwoord in Dutch Afrikaans.

I waited patiently through two opening sets by JEFF & the Brotherhood, a high-energy angry white kid duo-thing that played the hell out of an electric guitar and beat the shit of a used drum set, and then RYE-RYE, an attractive rapping Baltimore girl, her pitchman DJ and a semi-synchronized dance crew. Both bands’ music was entertaining enough and worthy (I guess) of opening for Die Antwoord, but I didn’t care; I’m not the club-going type, nor the kind of guy who travels to see music –not normally. I only made the trip across the time zone and a bunch of mediocre mountain ranges to investigate further the internet phenomenon that is Die Antwoord. Everything, everyone else in between was an inconvenient interlude.

And finally it was time for the long awaited reveal. The show opened with dark, menacing images of Leon Botha (aka DJ Solarise), one of Die Antwoord’s longtime South African backers and genuine believers, as well as one of the world’s longest living survivors of Progeria, projected onto a large screen above the stage. Creepy techno pulsed in from hidden house speakers and about 250 skinny-jeaned, in-the-know web creepers quickly came alive and pushed themselves up against the stage’s bowed railing. Then the muted DJ Hi-Tek, donning the mask of a grotesque apish figure born of out some Bokanovsky Process gone horribly wrong, slowly, yet purposefully walked out from the backstage shadows and took his place behind the set mixing board. His monstrosity of a rubber face lit green and black above his death music machine and he started hitting buttons and spinning invisible things. But it wasn’t until Yo-landi Phi$$er ran out onto the stage in her oversized playtime jumpsuit and masked hoodie that the collective energy of the Ballroom inhabitants imploded… and once Ninja appeared, strutting out onto the stage donning a full-on dark side, horned-one worshipping garb, the crowd completely exploded. The energy was absolute and sickening as I methodically pressed into the fan horde to try and get a closer view of the talented freaks.

While Ninja scares you with his deadlock, bug-eyed stares, ruff scrabbled urban-scrawled body tattoos and guttural Cape Town hoodlum threats, the nymphic & beautifully sick, helium-voiced Yo-landi Vi$$er heats you up with constant sexual teasing and snapshot flashes of her hot skinned, gold spandex’d business.

Their sound is quick, high-energy raw club rap that’s in-your-face, riddled with hard-edged Afrikaans obscenities. Above all, it’s highly Zef-motivated. Zef, according to Ninja, is “like the underbelly of Afrikaans; an embarrassing thing they want to hide away. The Zef swearing, for me, is so fucking extreme that it’s like cartoon language –this weird, like, freak mode fungus style. Because it’s not just language, it’s a whole culture.” It’s an overall feeling mixed with extreme coolness, overt ghetto-gangster fear-violence and overt, unprotected, uninhibited sexuality. Phi$$er’s definition of Zef is just as vague and difficult to grasp: “It’s associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and shit. Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style… it’s a South African underdog kind of style.” It’s been described as a unique urban style which is both modern and trashy, utilizing out-of-date, discarded cultural and style elements. Whatever it is, and however it fuels or channels the group’s creativity and drive, it (Zef) works and is ever-present in the Die Antwoord live experience.

Ninja’s lyrics are dangerous hybrids of both gangster and dramatic comedy. His high-energy is seemingly translated through his sinuous limbed gangling and knee-jerking physicality. A self-proclaimed freak of nature, he’s a badass mix between Vanilla Ice and the real-deal nuclear whacko living down the street in the unlicensed trailer. His body is tatted with hand written lyrics, primitive gang signs and crudely inked Richie Rich and giant-erection sporting Casper cartoons.

I cornered Len, DA’s South African chief stage manager, outside as he tried to steal a private, quiet moment during JEFF & the Brotherhood’s ridiculously loud set. He was drinking a Heineken, staring off across the series of black & white train tracks spread across the drizzling industrial Nashville night. I had my boys form a wall, allowing Len and myself the proper privacy and space to conduct the interview. He told me that this latest two month sweep across the US, a sort of re-release/premiere of the group’s $O$ album, has been “nothing but fuckin’ good times… surrounded by good people. We had ourselves a great party at every stop along the way.”

The show ended as abruptly as it started –with Ninja, Yo-Landi, and DJ Hi-Tek departing the stage one at a time, each having played an integral role in the audience’s blown-out experience. They played all of their tracks off their album, capping off the night with a special battle rap set against Enya’s early 90’s Sail Away hit. The Cannery was Die Antwoord’s final show in the states before jetting across the Atlantic to play Berlin’s infamous Ostenbahnhef, as well as performing at a series of other Euro club-stops along the way, ultimately ending the tour with a summer music festival back home in South Africa. If their mission on this stateside tour was to introduce and/or re-introduce themselves to the American public, then, as Len expressed under the dripping cold eave, caught in the fog of a hundred different cigarette smoke plumes, “it was a huge fuckin’ success.”

With most of the musical hooks written for a second, upcoming album (tentatively titled Tension), and backed by recently signed Interscope Records, Die Antwoord is going to be around awhile. In what form or at what level of fame depends entirely upon them and the next direction they opt to take. Regardless, Ninja promises that Die Antwoord will produce five albums total before they vanish back into the South African mist.

Most people stop climbing @ the 1st rock outcropping --not The Wanderer!

My kungfu brother & I finally had enough of our vital energies aligned to trailrun The Chimney Tops, a 2-mile, straight-up trail with large rocks & crazy roots & other true tests of the mental & physical! It was a heart-breaker of a hike, much less a trailrun. Throughout the journey up my brother & I passed wavering mortals unaware of the Glory that was awaiting them at the very edge of their physical thresholds…

The ever-winding vertical path reaches up to the heavens at a daunting 4,800 feet. It’s a double-capstone knob created by God which pierces out along the eastern shelf of The Great Smokey Mountains. What is actually the Chimneys is a sickening, zig-zag of bare rock summit made of prehistoric slate rock, phyllite,& metasiltsone… the series of “chimney tops” stick out into blue space above the green earth & shrinks everything else down into nothing.

The Wanderer, @ times, had to crawl along slick vertical slate on all fours! He was humbled by the amazing geological formation! Both Life & Death were easily at hand that Sunday… There were moments, very close to the end, that the trail seemed to be a long horrible ladder up with no end in sight. The Wanderer grew tired near the 2 mile mark, but in his mind he was sure he’d only traversed around a mile at that point. The constant straight-up run was a mindfuck.

In tandem, we trudged up slowly, mechanically past spent families, ambitious date-hikes & spirited youth groups. It was a glorious Sunday to be visiting one’s personal & private lord.

The History (per Wikipedia) of The Chimney Tops tells the story of an Native American legend. To the Cherokee, Chimney Tops is called Duniskwalgunyi, or forked antler, referring to its resemblance to the antlers of a deer. Legend has it a captured Cherokee medicine man, Aganunitsi, in exchange for his freedom, searched remote parts of the Smokies in hopes of finding the giant reptile, the Uktena, and seizing a powerful amulet from its forehead. In his quest, Aganunitsi searched distant gaps & peaks in the Smokies before he went on to Duniskwalgunyi, the Gap of the Forked Antler, & to the enchanted lake of Atagahi, and at each found monstrous reptiles, but he said they were nothing. My kungfu brother & I kept this story in our mind throughout the journey up.

To be cont…

The Wanderer, in total conjunction/cooperation with The Controller, has been working hard the past recent weeks, pushing heavy weights in rapid succession, hitting nearby trails in jackrabbit, summer-of-the-hare speed.

This summer, The Wanderer fully intends on, and executing the following bullet points:

continue intense strength training program

trailrun with Holland-pound weight

trailrun with kungfu brother on fun new trails

to be continued…

The weather has finally broke, enveloping the land & air with comforting temperatures in the 70′s & 80′s. And, as promised, motivation & power has quickly returned to The Wanderer. I’m hearing & feeling all too clearly the subtle mental prods & awesome strokes from The Controller & leaving my office chair spinning in beautiful, looping circles as I hustle down to the school’s open-aired gym. Bench pressing & shoulder shrugging massive amounts of weight has become a daily ritual. Sit-ups, gravity crunches, & trailrunning has also picked up once again, and soon my normal prison burpees will evolve into insane Chinese flying burpees! This weather brings to mind the incredible aural sweetness of summer bird songs & wicked green plant growth. Longer days to train & to be outside & sweat out the toxins of the long, sick winter will ensure a healthy & energized push through the next 6 key months.

EXPLODE INTO THE WARM SPRING AIR!!!

Be sure to stretch constantly throughout the day. If you’re committed to change & this process of seasonal recharge, & your workout explosions are taking place at multiple intervals throughout the day, then your body will relish the time taken to stretch. Slow, controlled shoulder shrugs & neck rolling should be executed while sitting completely erect & calm in your office chair. These exercises will improve the flexibility throughout your upper back, shoulders, & arms. Regarding your gentle neck rolls, your head should be rolling down from the left to the right, with chin to your chest as your middle point along the way to the other shoulder. This will lubricate & stretch the neck joints, relieving residual tension in your neck & shoulders. Pull your head all the way back in a silent laugh of hysteria & stretch out your throat & scream at the humming tubes of office florescence!

& Constant hydration is key! Right now, leave this nonsensical blog & find some clear, cold H2O to drink. Imbibe water, imbibe life! A colleague of mine swims everyday during her lunch hour. How much more pure of an exercise could there be?! For nearly an hour, Monday through Friday, she’s a beautiful fish, enveloped in absolute blue weightlessness! Do this if you can. If you can’t find a daily pool to sink & vanish into, then find a gym & move heavy weights around… Sweat! Bring your bicycle to work & get lost on the long, winding back country state roads of nowhereville, find a high school stadium to dominate… for your designated meal time hour, disappear into forests or patched woods… run up a mountain for 45 minutes. Whatever you do, get out of your office every day or you will become a plastic fixture. Would you rather be an ugly xerox machine or an angel fish? Leave your office chair spinning by itself!

Pure Life Vitality

Here’s The Wanderer’s Water Lecture: As a rule, you should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water every day. Also, add 2 glasses of water for each cup of coffee, tea, soda, or serving of alcohol. The Wanderer struggles with this particular mandate basically every weekend! Yes, The Wanderer has this horrible sickness!

You have no doubt heard this random fact throughout your life: the human body is composed of 75% water… & one would only survive about three or four days without some sort of hydration. Only nerve function & air is more important (or as important) for life than water.

As well as filling you up, water is a natural aid to weight loss… it replenishes much-needed fluids to function, cures the common headache, & has been proven to be an instant energy boost. Through natural filtration, drinking a healthy amount of water can prevent kidney damage &/or strain. What else??? Oh yes, height loss & decreased nerve function has been linked to dehydration. These are all scientific facts. So, after these next few sentences, log off, & go find some good, cold & pure water & drink it. If you’re reading this in the United States, then that shouldn’t be difficult. But The Wanderer has digressed… fallen off his original topic. Just be sure, if you plan on committing to this active lifestyle this warm spring & upcoming summer season, to stretch all your body throughout the day, both morning & afternoon, leave your office & exercise during your designated breaks; be a fish or squirrel, sit erect & as perfect as you can, & drink plenty of water!

With The Wanderer, become your summer warrior!

Late last night I hunkered down in bed & watched Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic classic, Seven Samurai. I’ve seen this great film a couple times before, but this time around, as the story progressed & the different warrior characters were introduced & developed, I found myself reflecting back on some of the chapters of a book my mother gave me awhile back: YOJOKUN: Life Lessons from a Samurai by 17th century samurai physician, neo-Confucian scholar (& one-time ronin), Kaibara Ekiken.

The book’s premise is simple: By design, the human body is meant to effectively last 100 years, & if lived properly, one can happily live out those 100 hundred years with great physical, mental, & spiritual health. The author gives a sort of daily lesson-type approach on how to successfully reach this century mark with our given, mortal bodies. Through carefully guided mental, spiritual, & physical discipline, as well as controlling one’s personal desires through healthy moderation & thoughtful appreciation, the life force within (or ch’i) can be properly cultivated, thus allowing the practitioner to live an actively long & fulfilled existence.

While Ekiken’s guidebook is loaded with over 400 amazing & practical lessons ranging from treatment for various illnesses to proper bathing techniques, I, as a nod the Kurosawa’s film which inspired this particular Wanderer post to mind, will only list 7… These are direct citations from Yojokun:

On Post-Consumption: After eating, you should rub your abdomen in a downward motion a number of times to stimulate your breathing. It is also good to rub the area on the left side of your belly in a diagonal motion with the inside of your index finger a number of times. In addition, you should rub your hips in a downward motion and gently strike the lower parts. You should not strike them forcefully. If your breathing is obstructed, look up and breathe out any noxious air three or four times.

On Exercise: If you are at home, it is good to do some light exercise from time to time. Activity such as standing up and sitting down should be considered beneficial, not troublesome. Servants should not do so much that you become inactive. You should handle some of the chores in your room; things get done more quickly and better when you do them yourself, so don’t bother with servants. When you are constantly moving your body in this way, your ch’i and blood will circulate well and your breathing will not be sluggish.

On Sexual Intercourse: You should not have sexual intercourse while holding back a full bladder. You should not engage in sex after having taken refined Sumatran camphor or musk.

On Sleeping: When you lie down to sleep at night, you simply must lie on your side. You should not lie on your back. Doing so will block your ch’i and bring on nightmares. You should not place your hands over your chest after you go to sleep. This will block your ch’i and will easily bring on troubled dreams. You should be cautious about these two things.

On Evening Activities: Reading books and having conversations with others at night should not go beyond the beginning of the third watch. The night is divided into five watches, so the third watch is halfway between the fourth and the ninth temple bells that notify the public of the time. If you do not go to sleep by midnight, your spirit will not become calm.

On Breathing: Breath should always be slow and drawn deeply into the tan t’ien. This should not be done quickly.

On Attaining Longevity: The technique for attaining longevity lies in decreasing your desires for food and sex, pacifying your mind and ch’i, and looking at things carefully and always deporting yourself with respect and circumspection. If you do this, you will not be frustrated by the things you encounter, your blood and ch’i will become regulated by themselves, and you will naturally have no illnesses.
